IV Sedation Dentistry: Is it Possible to Relax at the Dentist?
Have you avoided visiting the dentist for routine dental care due to a fear or phobia? Do you need to schedule a treatment but have been delaying due to severe anxiety over the length of treatment time? If this sounds like you or a loved one, you are not alone. Many Americans suffer from some form of dental fear that prevents them from receiving care. When you delay dental care or treatments, you are increasing the likelihood of needing additional treatments and spending more time in our office. While we do offer mild forms of sedation, such as nitrous oxide, we know that is not enough for patients with extreme fear. At Rivercrest Family Dental, we are able to provide IV sedation to patients who need the deepest relaxation possible.
What is IV Sedation Dentistry?
IV sedation can be beneficial to patients who suffer from extreme fear and phobias of the dentist. It can also be used for patients who have difficulty sitting for long periods of time, as seen with more in depth treatments and procedures. This sedation method is administered intravenously and allows our trained and certified team to continually adjust the levels as needed. It is perfectly safe and effective to help you get the dental care you need while you remain completely unaware of receiving treatment. Please note that, due to the effects of the sedation, it is necessary for patients to be accompanied to and from the procedure. Before a patient can drive again, all effects of the medication must have fully worn off.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Patients who have avoided the dentist and dental treatments are pleased with the many benefits IV sedation offers:
- No memory of undergoing the procedure
- No sense of time while under sedation
- No sense of smell or sound
- No fear or anxiety during treatment
