Try Sedation Dentistry and say goodbye to your dental anxiety

Dr. Barber and his team offer sedation for patients who need help calming their nerves while undergoing treatment.

We offer three types of sedation, depending on the patient’s needs:

  • nitrous oxide sedation
  • oral sedation
  • IV sedation

How Sedation Dentistry Works

    Nitrous Oxide Sedation

With nitrous oxide sedation, you inhale nitrous oxide gas — also known as laughing gas — through a mask. The gas relaxes you completely, melting away your anxiety, but it does not put you to sleep. In fact, you will be fully able to comply with the dentist’s instructions and answer questions while under nitrous oxide sedation. The effects of the gas wear off as soon as the mask is taken away, so you’ll be able to leave the office and get home on your own.

    Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a sedative about an hour or so before undergoing treatment. As with nitrous oxide sedation, you will remain conscious but in a state of total relaxation. You will be able to answer questions and follow directions during the procedure, but once it is over, you will have little to no memory of it. Because oral sedation is more intense than nitrous oxide and the effects are longer lasting, you will definitely need someone to accompany you to your appointment and take you home afterwards. You will not be able to drive once you take the sedative or immediately after treatment.

    IV Sedation

The third type of sedation we offer at Rivercrest Family Dental is IV sedation, where a sedative is administered intravenously. Unlike nitrous oxide or oral sedation, with IV sedation, you are completely unaware of what is taking place during treatment. IV sedation is perfectly safe and effective because we have trained and certified professionals who administer the medication and monitor you throughout the procedure. Because IV sedation is more intense and longer lasting than nitrous oxide, it is imperative that someone accompany you home after your procedure. You will be unable to drive until the effects of the medication have completely worn off.

At Rivercrest Family Dental, we can customize the level of sedation to meet your personal needs because we offer options to suit any patient.
